Jewelry designer Brock K. Green is a native of St. Louis. He has been an artist all his life, but has found that precious metals used in jewelry are his favorite mediums. Brock studied art under Theresa Long throughout Eureka Junior High and High School. Dr. Judy Felch taught the jewelry design classes he took while attending Principia College. After graduation from Principia with a degree in Spanish and a special focus in Jewelry Design, he headed north to Michigan's Camps Leelanau and Kohahna, where he spent 8 summers as the silversmithing counselor, one as the extreme nature counselor, and the tennis counselor. Brock has worked as a cabin counselor as well as a head counselor at Leelanau. While there, Brock also worked and studied with jewelry designer Becky Thatcher in her Glen Arbor studio, along with her master bench jewelers Bob Vertel and John Royce. Brock has taken advanced jewelry classes in gem setting, repair, and platinum fabrication at Conner Jeweler's Institute in New Albany, Indiana with Master Jeweler Charles Conner.
Currently, Brock's favorite types of pieces to design incorporate white and yellow gold, sea glass, and diamonds. Brock does all his work by hand, and each piece is made from solid sterling, gold, or platinum. There is nothing cast or machine made, and his bracelets, pendants, as well as limited editions are signed and numbered. Some of his original designs and limited editions are now "retired."
When asked why he does it this way, he says, "What is the thing that almost everyone has in common? Whether it is a necklace, wedding ring, watch, earrings, fancy belt buckle, or even glasses, most people have some type of accessory, namely jewelry on. The idea of personal adornment through jewelry is thousands of years old. When the prodigal son returned home in the Bible story, he was presented with a robe and a 'ring for his finger.' I make my jewelry so it is unique, the buyer knows that I made it, not a machine, and it is a piece of art.”
"When I used to do a lot of of art shows, I loved to see repeat customers follow me to each of my shows. They would tell me about the compliments they have received on their jewelry, and that they needed more! I do a lot of business from word of mouth sales." It is cool to get calls from people saying, "I saw so and so wearing a ..... that you made, can you make me one?"
I love to see people both young and old with an appreciation for art and unique designs come up and ask about my background and my work. A ring is a ring and a bracelet is a bracelet, well, almost! I just try to figure out ways to make them better!
